Alex is the Prospective Conservative Party candidate for the Parliamentary seat of Wakefield, Yorkshire. He believes in personal responsibility, low taxes, local democracy, light regulation, hard work, family, tough border controls, law & order and democratic accountability in the United Kingdom.
Alex represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in 1996, won the reputed Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race twice in 1997 and 1998, and was indoor European Champion and World Record holder with Sir Steven Redgrave and Sir Mattew Pinsent in 1994. His carreer at top level sport was shortened due to a heavy back injury in 1999.
Having been forced to give up his passion for the sport, Alex redirected his energies to serve his country in a different way. He joined the Conservative Party in 1999 inspired by (among others) William Hagues' common sense.
Alex grew up in France, in Fontainebleau. His mother is Austrian; his father is English. It is this very cosmopolitan upbringing that allowed him to treasure England's democratic and civil traditions. He set his sights on defending them.
He has worked in the world of news production, whether print or broadcast, since 2003. With his brother Nick, he set up Story Productions, a business documentary production company. He also worked as a financial reporter for Dow Jones newswires and as an assistant producer for CNBC, the business channel. In 2005, he wrote the concept for an online political TV station. This became the basis for Britain's first political online TV channel, 18 Doughty Street, to counter the acknowledged left-wing liberal bias in the UK broadcast media.
Alex stood for parliament in Denton & Reddish, Manchester, in the 2005 election. He stopped the 20 year decline of the conservative vote in the area and managed to get a near 4% swing in his favour, nearly 4 times the national average. In July 2007, he was proud to be selected by the Wakefield Conservative party. He now lives in Wakefield, and is married with three young children.
